When it hit the water, the fuselage broke off behind the wing, causing the top turret to fall on Conn, who was the Upper Gunner, and Harry F. Solis, the Engineer. The two injured men were able to escape with others. The entire front of the ship sank, and the canopy burst. Within a couple minutes, the remainder of the ship sank as well. Bedwell swam back to help Conn, who was covered in blood and hanging on the edge of a plane wing, because his life vest had not inflate. However, Conn sank before he was rescued. The ship was abandoned because all the motors were out. Of the ten original crew members, the seven survivors returned to the base. A search was never made for the three missing men because it was in enemy territory.
